AI Website Builder vs Web Designer: 12-Month Cost

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: an AI website builder costs less in cash for the first year, from about US$120 to US$477 on published yearly plans. A web designer costs more upfront but delivers custom copy, design and, with some studios, code you own and can move. Builders fit small sites where the owner has time to edit. A designer fits sites that need to produce leads.

Builder prices are from each platform's pricing page, checked October 2026. Currency is as each page shows it for Singapore visitors.

What does each option cost over 12 months?

Checked October 2026. Wix shows USD prices "for reference only" and states that prices and currency vary by location; its page showed prices including GST. Squarespace and Wix show annual prices as discounts, so check the renewal price before paying. Domain costs after year one are extra on every builder; cense leaves domain and email at the client's current cost.

Other studios publish starting prices from about S$2,500 for a small site. See website design cost in Singapore.

What the 12-month total leaves out

Your time

A builder is cheaper because you do the work. The AI drafts pages from a prompt; you supply the facts, rewrite the copy, choose images and fix layout on phone, tablet and desktop. Count those hours at your own rate.

Year two

A builder subscription repeats every year. A designer's build fee is usually one-off. Ask each studio for hosting and maintenance costs in writing, then compare 3 years, not 1.

A 3-year view

Using the same published prices for 3 years, before any renewal increase:

Option3-year software cost
Framer BasicUS$360
Squarespace Core, billed yearlyS$1,116
Framer ProUS$1,080
Wix BusinessUS$1,431.72
cense website packageS$2,000 to S$5,000+, with S$0 a month maintenance

Renewal prices on Wix and Squarespace may be higher than the first-year discount, which would raise the builder totals. Domain renewals are extra in every row.

Add-ons

  • Framer charges US$20 per extra editor, US$10 per content editor and US$20 per translation locale.
  • Squarespace Basic takes 2% of online store sales.

How fast is each option?

OptionTime to a first draft
Wix AI builderWix states it creates a site "from a single prompt"
SquarespaceLists an AI website builder for a starting site
FramerIts AI agents create "editable pages, sections, copy, and visuals from descriptions"
Singapore agency, custom build4 to 12 weeks, per Design Magic
censeFirst draft 14 days after the first call

The AI draft is fast. The finished site takes as long as your edits. For agency timelines, see how long it takes to build a website.

Who owns the website?

This is the largest difference and the hardest to reverse.

  • Wix: the Wix help centre states that a Wix site needs to be hosted on Wix's servers. You can connect a domain bought elsewhere, but you cannot move the site to another host.
  • Squarespace: Squarespace's export creates a WordPress file for layout pages, one blog and some blocks. Store pages, portfolio pages, style settings and custom CSS do not export, and images cannot be exported in bulk.
  • Framer: sites are hosted on Framer's site plans.
  • Designer-built code: depends on the contract. Ask in writing who owns the domain, the code and the hosting account.

With cense, the client owns the domain, the code on GitHub and the hosting.

What are the SEO and AI-search limits?

To be fair to builders: all three let you set page titles and meta descriptions, connect a custom domain and publish a sitemap. Many builder sites rank well. The platform is rarely the reason a small site fails to rank.

The limits are elsewhere.

  • Copy. AI builders write general copy from a short prompt. Search engines and AI answer engines quote specific facts: prices, locations, services, opening hours. Those have to come from you.
  • Structure. Builders give you templates. Custom schema and a page for each service and location take manual work on any template.
  • Control. You cannot change how the platform serves pages or move the site to faster hosting.
  • Migration. When you leave a builder, keeping every indexed URL needs a full redirect map. See website redesign without losing rankings.

For how AI answer engines pick sources, see SEO and AI search.

When an AI builder is the better choice

  • A personal site, portfolio or one-page event site.
  • A new venture testing demand before spending on a full site.
  • An owner who enjoys editing and has 10 or more hours to spend on it.
  • A budget below S$500 for the first year.

When a web designer is the better choice

  • The website is a main source of enquiries or sales.
  • You need copy written for your customers' searches and for AI answers.
  • You want to own the code and move hosts freely.
  • You are moving from an existing site and need its rankings kept.
  • No one on the team has time to build and edit pages.

cense compared with a builder

The cense package is from S$2,000 one-off, with S$0 a month maintenance and S$0 hosting on the standard plan for most business sites. It includes custom design, copy written from one call, 20 rounds of edits, a first draft in 14 days, and migration from Wix or Squarespace with every indexed URL kept or redirected. Is an AI website builder cheaper than a web designer?

In year one, yes, in cash. Published yearly plans run from about US$120 on Framer Basic to S$372 on Squarespace Core and US$477 on Wix Business. A designer costs more upfront, but the builder subscription repeats every year and your own hours are not counted.

Can I own a website made with Wix or Squarespace?

You own your content and domain. Wix states that a Wix site must be hosted on Wix's servers, and Squarespace exports only some content types to WordPress.

Are AI builder sites bad for SEO?

No. Wix, Squarespace and Framer all let you set page titles and descriptions and publish a sitemap. The limits are control over the code and hosting, and copy that is only as specific as the facts you give the AI.

When should I choose an AI website builder?

When the site is small, you have time to write and edit it, and you are content to stay on one platform. A personal site, a new venture or a one-page event site are good fits.

When should I hire a web designer?

When the website is a main source of leads, when you need specific copy for search and AI answers, or when you want to own the code and move hosts freely.
