GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?
Short answer: SEO (search engine optimisation) gets your pages ranked in search results so people click through. GEO (generative engine optimisation) gets your business quoted or cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Most of the work is shared, because AI engines search the web before they answer.
What is SEO?
SEO is the work of making pages rank in search engines such as Google and Bing. It covers three areas:
- Technical: pages can be crawled, indexed and loaded quickly on a phone.
- Content: pages match what people search for and answer it well.
- Authority: other sites link to and mention yours.
The result is a position on a results page. Success is measured in rankings, clicks and enquiries.
What is GEO?
GEO is the work of making content appear in answers written by AI. The term comes from a research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, submitted in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi and accepted to KDD 2024. The paper describes generative engines as systems that gather sources and summarise them into one answer.
In GEO, the goal is not a click. It is a mention of your business name, a quoted passage or a cited link inside the answer. Other names for the same work include AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI search optimisation.
GEO vs SEO: the differences
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A ranked list of links | Inside a written answer, as a mention or cited source |
| Main engines | Google, Bing | ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit that wins | A whole page | A passage, fact or table that can be quoted |
| User action | Clicks a result | Reads the answer, may click a cited source |
| Main measure | Rankings, clicks, enquiries | Mentions and citations across a set of questions |
| Crawlers | Googlebot, Bingbot | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, plus Googlebot for AI Overviews |
| Stability | Rankings move over weeks | Answers can change between two runs of the same question |
| Tooling | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools | Manual checks or tracking tools that run fixed prompts |
| Third-party role | Backlinks pass authority | Lists, reviews and forums are often the cited source |
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
Most of the work counts twice.
Crawling and indexing
Google states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central, checked October 2026). ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI). A page neither crawler can reach wins in neither channel.
Helpful, specific content
Google's guidance for AI features is the same as for ordinary results: content made "primarily for people" (Google Search Central). A page with real prices, durations and steps ranks better and is easier to quote.
Structured data
Schema.org markup for the business, services and FAQs helps every engine read the page. Google states there is "no special schema.org structured data" required for its AI features, so the same markup serves both.
Mentions on other sites
Links from other sites help SEO. Mentions in directories, reviews and lists help GEO, because AI answers to "best X in Singapore" often cite those pages.
What is different in practice?
Answer-first writing matters more
A results page shows a title and a snippet, and the reader clicks to find the answer. An AI engine pulls the answer out and may never send the click. Pages that state the answer in the first two sentences, then explain, give the engine a passage to quote. The GEO paper tested changes such as adding citations, quotations and statistics to content, and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in its benchmark. That is a lab result on a research engine, not a promise for ChatGPT or Google.
Crawler settings differ
SEO only needs Googlebot and Bingbot. GEO needs the AI search crawlers too. OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot (search) from GPTBot (model training), and each setting is independent. A site can block training and still appear in ChatGPT search. Blocking everything in a firewall removes the site from AI answers.
Measurement is less precise
Search Console reports Google rankings and clicks. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the same Performance report, within the "Web" search type. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini offer no equivalent console for site owners. GEO measurement means running a fixed list of customer questions each month and recording who is named.
Files that are not required
llms.txt is a proposal from September 2024, not a confirmed standard. Google states that you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in its AI features. It is optional in GEO and irrelevant to SEO.
What should a Singapore SME do first?
Order the work by what counts in both channels.
- Fix crawling. Check robots.txt and firewall settings allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Fix indexing. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap and clear the excluded pages that matter.
- One page per service. Each service and location gets its own page with a clear title.
- Answer first. Rewrite the opening of each key page to answer the main question with numbers: price range, duration, area served.
- Add structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness on the home page, Service on service pages, FAQPage where questions already appear.
- Complete Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, services and replies to reviews.
- Publish answers to buying questions. One article per question a customer asks before buying, such as cost, timeline and comparisons.
- Get listed where AI engines look. Industry directories, associations and "best of" lists for your category.
- Check AI answers monthly. Ask the same 10 to 20 questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and record the results.
Steps 1 to 6 are ordinary SEO and also the base for GEO. Steps 7 to 9 are where GEO adds work. A step-by-step guide to AI citations is in how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT.
Common mistakes
- Treating GEO as a separate project and neglecting indexing.
- Buying a tool or file that claims to guarantee AI mentions.
- Blocking AI crawlers to save bandwidth, then asking why ChatGPT does not mention the business.
- Writing long introductions before the answer.
- Measuring GEO from a single AI answer instead of a repeated set of questions.
How cense handles SEO and GEO
Every cense website includes titles, schema and a sitemap, and migrations keep or redirect every indexed URL. The Marketing AI agent add-on writes weekly articles, checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude answers, and upgrades pages ranking 5 to 20 from Search Console data. What is the difference between GEO and SEO?+
SEO aims to rank pages in search results so people click through. GEO aims to have AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews quote or cite your content in the answer itself.
Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. AI answer engines search the web before they answer, so a page that is not crawled and indexed is rarely cited. SEO is the base that GEO builds on.
Where did the term GEO come from?+
It was introduced in a research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, submitted to arXiv in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi.
Should a small business start with GEO or SEO?+
Start with the shared base: crawlable, indexed pages that answer specific customer questions. That work counts for both Google rankings and AI citations.
Is there a separate setup for Google AI Overviews?+
Google states there are no additional requirements, special schema or AI text files needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
