E-commerce SEO for Singapore Stores

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer: e-commerce SEO for a Singapore store is four jobs: make category pages the pages that rank, mark up product pages with Google's merchant listing structured data, stop filters and variants creating thousands of duplicate URLs, and get product pages under Google's 2.5 second Largest Contentful Paint target on a phone. Shopee and Lazada listings rank for the marketplace, not for you; your own pages are the only ones that bring the customer record home.

Sources are Google Search Central's e-commerce documentation, web.dev, Baymard Institute, Stripe and Shopee's published seller fees, checked 18 October 2026.

Why are category pages the main ranking pages?

A buyer who knows the product searches the product name and lands on a marketplace or the brand. A buyer who knows the category searches "running shoes singapore" or "ergonomic office chair". The category page is what matches that query.

What a category page needs:

  • A heading that names the category and, where buyers add it, the place.
  • 80 to 150 words of text above or beside the grid: what the category covers, price range, delivery time, returns.
  • Products listed with name, price, image and stock state, each linked with a standard anchor tag.
  • Pagination with a unique URL per page. Google's pagination guidance asks for links from each page to the next and a canonical for each page, not all pointing to page one.
  • Sub-categories linked from the page, so a buyer and a crawler can narrow down.

Infinite scroll hides products from crawlers because they do not trigger scroll events. If the theme uses it, Google's guidance is to list every product in a sitemap or a Merchant Center feed as well. Google's URL structure guidance also asks for descriptive words in URLs: /product/black-office-chair rather than /product/3243.

How should a product page be structured?

One product, one URL, one set of facts.

  • Name, price, currency, stock state and delivery estimate visible on the first screen.
  • 100 to 300 words of original description. Manufacturer text copied across 40 stores is duplicate content on all 40.
  • Specifications as a table.
  • Reviews with the date and a star rating.
  • Shipping and returns summarised on the page, linked to the policy pages.

Mark the page up. Google's product structured data documentation describes two sets: product snippets for pages where the product cannot be bought, and merchant listings for pages where it can. Merchant listings carry price, availability, shipping and return details and make the page eligible for shopping results. Variant markup tells Google which products share a parent.

Two cautions from Google's own documentation:

  • Its AI optimisation guide (May 2026) says structured data is not required for AI features but recommends keeping it for rich results and shopping eligibility.
  • The markup must match the page. A price in the markup that differs from the price shown breaks the structured data policy.

How do variants and filters create duplicate content?

A store with 200 products, 5 colour options and 6 filters can expose 50,000 URLs to Google. Most show the same products in a different order.

Google's faceted navigation guidance states the cost: crawlers fetch large numbers of filter URLs before discovering they are useless, which leaves less crawl time for new pages.

Rules that fix it:

  • Variants. Give each variant its own URL as a path or parameter, /t-shirt?color=green, and set the canonical to the base product URL when the parameter is optional.
  • Filters that should not rank. Block the filter parameters in robots.txt, move filtering to a URL fragment, or add nofollow to filter links.
  • Filters that should rank, such as a brand within a category: give them a static URL, text and a self-referencing canonical.
  • Sort orders. Noindex, or canonical to the unsorted page.
  • Empty results. Return a 404, not a page with zero products and a 200.
  • Session IDs and tracking codes. Never in a crawlable link.

Google's canonicalisation guidance ranks the signals: a redirect is strongest, then rel="canonical", then a sitemap entry, and they stack.

How fast does a product page need to be?

Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds, at the 75th percentile of visits on mobile: Largest Contentful Paint 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint 200 milliseconds, Cumulative Layout Shift 0.1. Product pages fail LCP most often because the hero image is uncompressed and loads after a carousel script.

The business case is documented:

  • Deloitte's Milliseconds Make Millions study for Google found a 0.1 second mobile speed gain raised retail conversion 8.4%.
  • Vodafone's A/B test found a 31% better LCP produced 8% more sales and an 11% higher cart-to-visit rate.
  • Baymard's checkout research puts average cart abandonment at 70.22% across 50 studies, with 17% of abandoners citing site errors or crashes and 18% citing forced account creation.

Fixes, in order:

  1. Serve images in WebP or AVIF at the displayed size, with width and height set.
  2. Load the first product image eagerly and everything below the fold lazily.
  3. Remove apps that inject scripts on every page. Each Shopify app adds its own.
  4. Set a fixed height for review widgets and recommendation blocks so the page does not shift.
  5. Check in PageSpeed Insights on mobile after each change.

E-commerce SEO checklist

  • Every category has a heading, 80 to 150 words of text and paginated URLs with per-page canonicals.
  • Every product has original description text, a specification table and merchant listing markup that matches the visible price.
  • Variant URLs canonical to the base product.
  • Filter and sort parameters blocked, fragmented or noindexed; empty results return 404.
  • No session IDs or tracking parameters in internal links.
  • Product pages pass LCP 2.5 seconds on mobile at the 75th percentile.
  • Sitemap lists every canonical product and category URL and nothing else.
  • Merchant Center feed submitted and matching the site.
  • Search Console checked monthly for crawl errors, duplicate canonicals and Core Web Vitals.

What cense does

Which pages should an online store try to rank?

Category pages. They match the queries buyers type before they know a product name. Each needs a heading, 80 to 150 words of text, products linked with standard anchor tags and pagination with a unique URL and canonical per page.

What structured data does a product page need?

Google's merchant listing structured data for pages where the product can be bought: price, availability, shipping and returns, plus variant markup. Product snippet markup is for pages that only describe or review a product.

Do product variants and filters hurt SEO?

They can expose tens of thousands of near-duplicate URLs. Google's guidance is to canonical variants to the base product, block or fragment filter parameters that should not rank, noindex sort orders and return 404 for empty results.

How fast must a product page load?

Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds at the 75th percentile on mobile: Largest Contentful Paint 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint 200 milliseconds, Cumulative Layout Shift 0.1. Vodafone's test found a 31% LCP gain produced 8% more sales.

Should I sell on Shopee or my own website?

Both. Marketplace listings rank for the marketplace's domain and the customer record stays there; your own product pages rank for your domain and the customer record is yours. Marketplace fees stack to roughly 10% to 20% per order in 2026 guides.
