E-commerce Website Redesign: What to Change First

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: redesign the pages between a product view and a paid order first: product page, cart and checkout. Baymard's meta-analysis of 50 studies puts average cart abandonment at 70.22%, and the main stated reasons are extra costs, slow delivery and trust, not the home page. Measure drop-off per step in GA4 before changing any design, and keep or redirect every product URL.

Which store pages affect sales most?

Every paid order passes through the same four pages. Fix them in the order buyers meet them closest to payment.

Baymard's cart abandonment list, checked October 2026, gives the reasons shoppers gave for leaving during checkout, excluding people who were only browsing:

  • Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees): 40%
  • Delivery too slow: 20%
  • Did not trust the site with card details: 19%
  • Site wanted an account: 18%
  • Checkout too long or complicated: 17%
  • Website errors or crashes: 17%
  • Could not see the total cost upfront: 12%

Six of those seven are checkout and product page problems. In practice the priority order is:

  1. Checkout. Guest checkout, delivery cost shown before the payment step, local payment methods (PayNow, cards, GrabPay), and the fewest fields that still complete an order. Baymard counts 23.48 form elements on the average US checkout by default.
  2. Product page. Price including GST, stock status, delivery time to a Singapore address, returns in one line, and photos that load fast on a phone.
  3. Cart. A running total with delivery, and a clear path back to shopping.
  4. Category and search. Filters that match how buyers describe the product, not how the warehouse labels it.

The home page comes last. Most paid traffic and most Google traffic lands on product and category pages.

How do I find where buyers drop off?

Measure before you redesign. Two tools are free.

  • GA4 ecommerce events. Google's ecommerce event reference defines view_item, add_to_cart, view_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase. Shopify, WooCommerce and a custom build can all send them.
  • GA4 funnel exploration. Google's funnel exploration guide lets you chain up to 10 steps and shows how many users fall out at each one. Use a closed funnel so every user starts at the first step.
  • PageSpeed Insights. Run it on one product page and the checkout on mobile. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 at the 75th percentile.
  • Session recordings. Watch 20 mobile sessions that reached begin_checkout and did not purchase.

Read the funnel by step. A large fall between add_shipping_info and add_payment_info points at delivery cost or delivery time. A fall between begin_checkout and add_shipping_info points at forced account creation or form length. Fix the biggest fall first, then re-measure after 30 days.

Mobile matters more than desktop here. Statcounter puts mobile at 56.86% of Singapore web traffic in September 2026.

Can I redesign without losing product rankings?

Yes, if URLs and product content survive the redesign.

Google's site move guidance is the reference. The steps that matter for a store:

  • Export every indexed URL from Search Console and the sitemap before work starts. Record clicks per URL for the last 12 months.
  • Keep product and category URLs unchanged where the platform allows it.
  • For each URL that must change, write a 301 redirect to the closest new page. Google says to keep redirects for at least 1 year.
  • Keep the product name, description and specifications. Rewritten copy is a content change, and content changes move rankings.
  • Keep Product structured data with name, image, offers, price and availability on every product page.
  • Expect fluctuation. Google states that medium-sized sites can take a few weeks or more before new URLs replace old ones in results.

On Shopify, product and collection paths are fixed and cannot be redirected away from, per Shopify's URL redirect documentation. Redirects there work only from URLs that already return a 404, and a standard store can hold up to 100,000 of them. Our guide on redesigning without losing rankings covers the checks at 30 and 90 days.

Redesign on the same platform or switch?

Switch only when the platform blocks a change you have already decided to make. A redesign on the same platform is a smaller project; a platform move adds a URL map, a product and customer export, and payment re-setup.

FactorStay on the platformSwitch platform
Checkout controlShopify standard plans: limited to settings and appsCustom build: every field
Product URLsKeptKept only with a redirect map
Platform fee per monthShopify Basic S$39 monthly or S$29 yearly; Advanced S$531 monthly or S$399 yearly (Shopify Singapore pricing, checked October 2026)Hosting only on a custom build
Fee per orderShopify Payments online 3.2% + S$0.50 on Basic; 2% extra if you use another gatewayGateway fee only
Project sizeTheme, copy, photos, appsEverything above plus migration and redirects

Reasons that justify a switch in our experience: the checkout cannot be changed, monthly fees plus apps exceed the cost of owning the code, or the business wants customer and order data in its own database. Reasons that do not: colour, layout or a new theme, which a same-platform redesign handles. See Shopify vs WooCommerce in Singapore for the running-cost comparison.

What does a store redesign cost in Singapore?

Cost follows the scope, and the scope follows the funnel data above.

  • Checkout and product page only. The smallest useful project. Copy, photos, delivery and payment settings, and a Core Web Vitals pass.
  • Full redesign on the same platform. Every template, navigation, search and content.
  • Redesign with a platform move. The above plus data migration, redirect map and payment re-integration.

cense quotes a website, or a website with infrastructure, in full before work starts. The quote is given in full before work starts, with the first draft 14 days after one call and up to 20 rounds of edits. See the e-commerce website design page for what the build includes.

Items a store redesign quote should list:

  • URL export, redirect map and post-launch ranking check
  • Product data migration, including variants and images
  • Payment gateway set-up and a test order in each method
  • Delivery rules by postcode or weight
  • GST display and invoice format
  • GA4 ecommerce events and a funnel report
  • Mobile Core Web Vitals targets in writing

What cense does

cense builds e-commerce sites in Next.js on Vercel or Google Cloud, with the client owning the domain, code, hosting and order data, and S$0 monthly maintenance. Every lead and order lands in the client's own database. Start from the e-commerce website design page.

Which page should an e-commerce redesign start with?

The checkout, then the product page. Baymard's meta-analysis puts average cart abandonment at 70.22%, and the top stated reasons (extra costs, slow delivery, trust, forced accounts) all sit on those two pages.

How do I find where buyers drop off?

Send the GA4 ecommerce events (view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info, purchase) and build a closed funnel exploration. The step with the largest fall is the first thing to redesign.

Will a redesign hurt my product rankings on Google?

Only if product URLs change without redirects or product content is removed. Keep URLs where you can, map every changed URL to a 301 redirect, and keep redirects for at least 1 year as Google recommends.

Should I switch platform during the redesign?

Switch only if the current platform blocks a specific change, such as checkout control or fees. A platform move adds a URL map, data export and payment re-setup to the project.

Published Singapore agency packages for store builds start at a few thousand dollars. cense quotes a website, or a website with infrastructure, in full before work starts.
