Payment Gateways for Websites in Singapore: Fees Compared

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: for Singapore websites, Stripe charges 3.4% + S$0.50 per domestic card payment and 1.3% for PayNow. HitPay publishes lower rates for local methods: 2.8% + S$0.50 for local cards and 0.65% + S$0.30 for PayNow on orders of S$100 and above. PayPal costs more per card sale but brings buyers who already hold PayPal accounts.

Every fee below is from each provider's own Singapore pricing page, checked October 2026. Fees exclude any GST the provider adds. Where a provider did not publish a fee for a method, the cell says so.

Checked October 2026 on each provider's Singapore page. Airwallex lists local methods, including GrabPay, as "$0.50 plus payment method fees" without itemising each method.

Other methods each provider lists

Stripe

  • Alipay: 2.2% + S$0.35.
  • WeChat Pay: 2.2% + S$0.35.
  • Disputes: S$15.00 for each dispute received, and S$15.00 for each dispute you respond to manually.

Stripe's PayNow documentation states that PayNow works for Singapore Stripe accounts in SGD, through Checkout, Payment Links, Invoicing and Elements. Funds reach the Stripe balance 1 day after the payment. PayNow payments have no chargeback process.

HitPay

  • ShopeePay: 3%.
  • Atome: 5.5%.
  • PayLater by Grab: 5.5%.
  • ShopeePay Later: 5%.
  • ShopBack: 3.9% + S$0.20.
  • WeChat Pay: 1.5%.

HitPay states "no setup fees and monthly fees required". Its Shopify app adds 0.5% and its WooCommerce plugin adds 0.2% on top of these rates.

PayPal

PayPal's wallet fee applies when a buyer pays from a PayPal account. Its advanced credit and debit card payments, where the buyer enters a card without a PayPal account, are 3.40% + S$0.50.

What does one order cost?

A worked example using the published rates for a S$120 order.

PaymentStripeHitPayPayPal
Local cardS$4.58S$3.86S$4.58 (advanced card)
PayNowS$1.56S$1.08Not published
GrabPayS$3.96S$3.60Not published
PayPal wallet, domesticNot offeredNot offeredS$5.18

Calculation: percentage of S$120 plus the fixed fee. Platform or plugin fees are not included.

At 100 such orders a month paid by PayNow, the gap between Stripe and HitPay is S$48. At 100 local card orders, it is S$72.

Why the fixed fee matters on small orders

Stripe, HitPay and PayPal all add S$0.50 to each card payment. On a S$20 order, that fixed fee alone is 2.5% of the sale.

Order valueStripe local cardEffective rate
S$20S$1.185.9%
S$50S$2.204.4%
S$200S$7.303.65%

Calculation: 3.4% of the order plus S$0.50. Businesses with many small orders should push PayNow, where Stripe charges a flat 1.3% and HitPay 0.9% below S$100.

How to choose a gateway

The cheapest headline rate is one input. These decide most choices.

Your customers' payment mix

If most customers pay by PayNow, the PayNow rate matters most. Check last quarter's orders or ask your bank how customers pay you today.

Your website platform

  • Shopify: Shopify Payments has its own rates and does not list PayNow. Any third-party gateway adds Shopify's transaction fee, 2% on Basic. See Shopify vs WooCommerce in Singapore.
  • WooCommerce: most gateways publish a plugin. Check the plugin fee as well as the gateway fee.
  • Custom site: Stripe Checkout and Payment Links need no plugin.

International customers

Stripe adds 0.5% for international cards and 2% for currency conversion. HitPay charges 3.65% + S$0.50 for international cards and 2% on foreign currency. PayPal suits buyers abroad who prefer not to enter card details.

Refunds and disputes

Card payments can be disputed. Stripe charges S$15.00 per dispute received. PayNow payments on Stripe have no chargeback process, because the customer authenticates in their banking app.

Payout timing and reconciliation

Check how fast funds reach your bank and whether the gateway exports reports your accountant can match. A gateway that saves 0.3% but takes 2 hours a month to reconcile may cost more in time.

Common setups for Singapore websites

BusinessTypical setupReason
Service business taking depositsStripe Payment Links or Checkout on a custom siteNo plugin, cards and PayNow in one checkout
Local retail with mostly PayNow buyersHitPayLowest published PayNow rate of the four
Shopify store selling across AsiaShopify Payments, with a PayNow app if neededLowest Shopify card rate, no third-party fee on cards
Exporter with overseas buyersStripe or PayPalInternational cards and PayPal wallets

These are common patterns, not rules. Run your own order mix through the tables above.

Checklist before going live

  1. Confirm the gateway approves your business category. Stripe, for example, lists fuel businesses as prohibited for PayNow.
  2. Turn on the methods your customers use, and test each with a real S$1 payment.
  3. Show every accepted method on the checkout page.
  4. Set the statement name customers will see on their bank record.
  5. Record payment data handling in your privacy notice. See the website PDPA checklist.

How cense sets up payments

Every cense website is from S$2,000 one-off with S$0 a month maintenance, and the client owns the domain, code and hosting. The package includes WhatsApp enquiry buttons, titles, schema and a sitemap, and stores can be built on Shopify or as a custom site with Stripe.
