How to Check What ChatGPT Says About Your Business

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the same 8 to 10 questions a customer would ask, with web search on, and record the answer, the sources cited and the date in a spreadsheet. Wrong facts almost always trace to an old page, directory listing or profile that the engine read. Fix the source, then re-test after 2 to 4 weeks.

Sources are OpenAI, Perplexity and Google documentation, checked 17 October 2026.

Which prompts should I test?

Test the questions that come before a purchase, not your brand name alone. Three groups.

Brand prompts

  • "What does [company] do?"
  • "Is [company] legitimate, and what do reviews say?"
  • "How much does [company] charge for [service]?"
  • "Where is [company] located and what are its opening hours?"

Category prompts

  • "Best [service] in Singapore for [customer type]"
  • "[service] Singapore price"
  • "Compare [company] and [competitor]"

Problem prompts

  • "I need [outcome] in [area]. Who should I contact?"

Rules for the test:

  • Turn on web search in ChatGPT. Without it, ChatGPT answers from training data with a cut-off date. OpenAI documents separate crawlers for search (OAI-SearchBot) and training (GPTBot) (OpenAI).
  • Use a fresh session, logged out where possible, so earlier chats do not colour the answer.
  • Test in English and in the languages your customers use. Chinese for most Singapore and Hong Kong firms.
  • Test all four engines. Google AI Mode has been available to Singapore users in English since 25 August 2025 (TechCoffeeHouse).

How do I record AI answers over time?

A spreadsheet with one row per prompt, per engine, per run.

ColumnWhat to enter
DateRun date
EngineChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or AI Mode
PromptExact wording
MentionedYes or no
PositionOrder in which you appear, if the answer is a list
Facts statedPrice, address, services, as the engine wrote them
ErrorsEach wrong fact, one per line
Sources citedEvery URL the engine linked
Competitors namedWho else appeared

The sources column is the one that pays. It shows which pages each engine trusts for your category. If a directory you have never updated is cited and your site is not, you know where to work.

For Google, add the Search Console Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date (Search Console Help). It does not show the text of the answer, so the manual test stays.

Why does ChatGPT give wrong facts about my business?

Four causes, in rough order of frequency.

  • Training data is old. A model answers from what it learned at training time unless it searches. A 2023 price or a closed branch can persist for years.
  • The engine read an outdated source. Directories, old press, a previous website still live on a subdomain, a PDF brochure from 2021. Search-enabled answers cite these when they rank.
  • Your own site is unclear. Services described in adjectives, no prices, the address only in an image. The engine fills the gap from elsewhere or guesses.
  • Name collision. Another business with a similar name in another country. Common for short English names.

OpenAI's documentation also notes that ChatGPT-User fetches pages at the moment a user asks. One answer can reflect your page as it is today while the same question tomorrow is answered from training memory. The same business can get two different answers in a week, which is why the sheet records the sources.

How do I correct outdated information?

There is no form at OpenAI, Google or Perplexity to edit what the engines say about a company. The thumbs-down button reports an answer; it does not correct a fact. Correction happens at the source.

  1. Your website first. Put the correct fact in plain text on the relevant page and in the footer: name, address, phone, hours, prices, services. Add a visible last-updated date. Confirm the page is indexed in Google and Bing, since the search engines feed the AI engines.
  2. Google Business Profile. Edit name, category, address, hours, phone, website and description. Google states it reviews changes before they go live (Google Business Profile Help).
  3. Directories and profiles. LinkedIn, industry bodies, review sites and listing sites. Work down the sources column.
  4. Old pages. Redirect or update superseded pages on your own domain. Ask publishers to update old articles where the fact is material.
  5. Structured data. Mirror the facts in Organization or LocalBusiness markup so there is one machine-readable version.
  6. Allow the crawlers. Check that robots.txt and your CDN permit OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. OpenAI states robots changes take about 24 hours to apply (OpenAI); Perplexity documents that PerplexityBot respects robots.txt (Perplexity).

A longer method covering indexing and third-party mentions is in how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT. How the crawlers read a page is in how AI search reads your website.

How often should I re-test?

  • Monthly for the full prompt set. About one hour for 10 prompts across 4 engines.
  • 2 to 4 weeks after any fix, to see whether the cited source changed.
  • After any change to price, address, hours, services or company name.
  • After a model change. Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode at I/O on 19 May 2026 (Google). Answers shift when models do.

Keep the sheet for a year. The trend across runs, not one answer, shows whether the work is landing.

How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business?

Ask ChatGPT with web search on, in a fresh session, the questions a customer would ask: what you do, what you charge, where you are, and who is best for your service. Record the answer, the sources it cites and the date.

Why does ChatGPT give wrong information about my business?

It answered from training data with a cut-off date, or it read an outdated directory, old press or a superseded page on your own site. Name collisions with similar businesses elsewhere are the other common cause.

Can I ask OpenAI to correct facts about my company?

There is no correction form. The thumbs-down button reports an answer but does not change a fact. Corrections happen by fixing the sources the engine reads: your site, Google Business Profile, directories and old articles.
