When to Redesign a Website: 8 Signs

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: redesign when the site fails a test you can measure, not when it looks dated. The eight signs below cover mobile speed, enquiries per visit, wrong facts, editing cost, ownership and lead storage. A site that passes them needs updates, not a rebuild. A site that fails three or more is costing enquiries now.

How old is too old for a business website?

Age is a weak signal. A 5-year-old site that loads in 2 seconds on a phone, states current prices and sends every enquiry to a database is doing its job. A 2-year-old builder site that fails on mobile is not.

Use these eight signs instead of a date.

  1. Mobile Core Web Vitals fail. Google's thresholds are LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 at the 75th percentile. Run PageSpeed Insights on the home page and one service page.
  2. The mobile layout is a shrunken desktop page. Statcounter puts mobile at 56.86% of Singapore web traffic in September 2026, and Google indexes the mobile version of your pages.
  3. Enquiries per 100 visits fell while traffic held. The design or the offer stopped matching what visitors wanted.
  4. Services, prices, team or address on the site are wrong. A site that is wrong is worse than a site that is plain.
  5. Editing a page costs money or takes a week. If every text change goes through an agency ticket, the site has stopped being yours in practice.
  6. You do not own the domain, hosting or code. A builder account in the agency's name, or a theme you cannot export, is a lock-in, not a website.
  7. Enquiries arrive by email only. No stored record means a lost email is a lost lead.
  8. The platform needs monthly patching. WordPress published 10 releases in the 12 months to October 2026, 7 of them security releases. Each one is a task or a risk.

Redesign or update: what is the difference?

An update keeps the code and platform. A redesign replaces them. The choice decides cost, timeline and SEO risk.

Google's site move guidance sets the redirect rule: map every old URL to its closest new page and keep the redirects for at least 1 year.

Which problems a refresh will not fix?

A new design changes the container. It does not change what is inside it or who arrives.

  • Wrong traffic. If visitors come from a search that does not match your service, the enquiry rate stays low on any design. Check the top queries in Search Console first.
  • Unclear offer. A visitor who cannot tell what you sell, for whom, and at what price range will leave. That is copy, not layout.
  • No proof. Case studies, client names where allowed, credentials and reviews belong on the page. A template cannot invent them.
  • Slow response to enquiries. A lead answered the next day is a lead lost to the firm that answered in 10 minutes.
  • Hosting and DNS faults. Downtime, expired certificates and missing security headers are infrastructure problems, and a new design does not touch them.

Fix these alongside a redesign, or before one. Our website audit checklist walks through each check.

How do I decide with data, not taste?

Four reports settle the question in an afternoon. All are free.

  • Search Console, Performance. Clicks and impressions for the last 12 months against the 12 before. A fall with stable impressions points at titles and snippets. A fall in impressions points at content or technical problems.
  • Search Console, Core Web Vitals. Count the URLs marked Poor on mobile.
  • GA4. Sessions and enquiries by device. Compute enquiries per 100 sessions for mobile and desktop separately. A mobile rate below half the desktop rate is a mobile design problem.
  • PageSpeed Insights. Mobile score and the three Core Web Vitals on the home page, a service page and the contact page.

Then list the pages. Mark each one: visited in the last 12 months or not, facts correct or not, converts or not. Pages with no visits and no purpose are removed in the redesign, with a redirect to the nearest page that stays.

Write the result as a one-page brief: the failing tests, the pages that stay, the pages that go, and the target numbers after launch. That brief is what an agency should quote against.

What should I prepare before a redesign?

A redesign stalls on access and copy more than on design. Prepare these before the first call.

  • Accounts. Login or ownership of the domain registrar, DNS, hosting, Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile. If an agency holds any of them, request the transfer now.
  • URL export. Every indexed URL with 12 months of clicks, from Search Console. This becomes the redirect map.
  • Copy. Services, prices or price ranges, team, address, opening hours, and the three questions clients ask most. Approved by the person who can sign off.
  • Photos and logo files. Originals, not screenshots. Confirm the licence for any stock image.
  • Proof. Case studies, client logos with permission, credentials, awards, review links.
  • Forms. The fields you need to qualify an enquiry, and where the record should be stored.
  • A decision owner. One person who approves drafts. Edit rounds multiply when approval is shared.
  • Launch window. A week with no campaigns, so the 30-day comparison is clean.

With these ready, the first draft from cense arrives 14 days after one call, with up to 20 rounds of edits before launch.

How often should a business website be redesigned?

There is no fixed interval. Redesign when the site fails a measurable test: mobile Core Web Vitals, enquiries per 100 visits, wrong business facts, or a platform you cannot edit or leave.

What is the difference between a website update and a redesign?

An update changes content or a few pages on the same code and platform. A redesign replaces the structure, templates and usually the platform, and needs a redirect plan.

Will a redesign fix low enquiries?

Only if the cause is on the site. If traffic is the wrong audience, or the offer and price are unclear, a new design changes little. Check the traffic source and the copy first.

What data should I check before deciding?

Search Console clicks and Core Web Vitals, GA4 enquiries per 100 sessions by device, PageSpeed Insights on mobile, and a list of pages with no visits in 12 months.

What should I prepare before a redesign starts?

A URL export with 12 months of clicks, access to the domain and hosting accounts, approved copy for services and prices, photos, and a decision on who signs off.
