Wix vs WordPress vs Custom Website for Singapore SMEs

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: Wix is the fastest way for an owner to build a small site, but the site cannot leave Wix. WordPress gives full ownership and a large plugin library, but needs regular updates. A custom-coded site costs more to build, and can run with no platform subscription, no plugins to update and full ownership of the code.

Prices below are from each platform's own pricing page, checked October 2026.

How much does each cost?

Wix

Wix's plans page showed, for Singapore visitors, these prices in USD with GST included, billed yearly:

PlanMonthly price12 months
LightUS$17.77US$213.24
CoreUS$29.77US$357.24

Business EliteUS$159.77US$1,917.24

Checked October 2026. Wix states that USD prices are "for reference only" and that prices and currency vary by location. Paid yearly plans include a free domain for 1 year.

WordPress

WordPress software is free. You pay for hosting and any paid themes or plugins. The managed option, WordPress.com, lists these plans in USD:

PlanAnnual billing, per monthMonthly billingPluginsOnline store
PersonalUS$4US$9YesNo
PremiumUS$8US$18YesNo
BusinessUS$25US$40YesYes
CommerceUS$45US$70YesYes

Checked October 2026. Self-hosted WordPress runs on any web host; for online stores, WooCommerce puts hosting at US$25 to US$350 a month and paid extensions at US$29 to US$299 a year each.

Custom-coded site

A custom site has a build fee and no platform subscription. Singapore studios that publish prices start from about S$2,500 for a small site, see website design cost in Singapore. The cense package is from S$2,000 one-off with S$0 hosting on the standard plan.

What maintenance does each need?

  • Wix: Wix runs the servers, security and updates. You keep content current.
  • WordPress: WordPress core, the theme and each plugin release updates. Each update can conflict with another plugin, so someone has to apply, test and back up. WordPress.com lists over 60,000 plugins; each one installed is one more to keep current.
  • Custom-coded: with no CMS plugins, there is less to update. Dependencies in the code still need occasional upgrades, done by the developer.

For typical costs, see website maintenance cost in Singapore.

Which one loads fastest?

Google asks site owners to aim for Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, per its Core Web Vitals guidance. Google describes good Core Web Vitals as aligned with what its core ranking systems seek to reward.

  • Wix: speed is mostly set by the platform. You control image sizes and how many apps and effects each page loads.
  • WordPress: speed depends on hosting, theme and plugin count. A lean theme on good hosting can be fast; a page builder with 30 plugins often is not.
  • Custom-coded: speed is set by the build. Pages ship only the code they use.

Test any site at PageSpeed Insights before deciding. Measure, do not assume.

Who owns the website?

  • Wix: the Wix help centre states that a Wix site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers. You can connect a domain bought elsewhere, but you cannot take the site to another host.
  • WordPress: the files and database are yours and move to any host.
  • Custom-coded: the code is yours if the contract says so. Ask for the domain, the code repository and the hosting account in your company's name.

Which is best for SEO?

All three can rank. Search results depend far more on content, relevance and links than on the platform.

  • Wix: titles, descriptions, sitemap and redirects are built in. Less control over how pages are served.
  • WordPress: the same basics, plus SEO plugins, custom schema and full server control.
  • Custom-coded: titles, schema, sitemap and redirects are whatever the developer builds. A good build includes them from day one; a poor one leaves them out.

AI answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity also read your pages. Specific, factual copy matters more than the platform. See SEO and AI search.

When does each one fit?

Wix fits when

  • You want to build and edit the site yourself.
  • The site is small, under about 15 pages.
  • You will stay on Wix for the long term.

WordPress fits when

  • Your team publishes content often and knows the editor.
  • You need a specific plugin, such as bookings or memberships.
  • You have a developer or provider for monthly updates.

A custom-coded site fits when

  • The website is a main source of enquiries.
  • You want speed, full ownership and no plugin upkeep.
  • You prefer the studio to make content changes rather than editing pages yourself.

Moving between them

Moving from Wix or WordPress to a custom site means mapping every indexed URL to its new address, or redirecting it. Skipping this loses rankings. See website redesign without losing rankings.

How cense builds

cense builds custom-coded sites from S$2,000 one-off, with S$0 a month maintenance and S$0 hosting on the standard plan for most business sites. The client owns the domain, code on GitHub and hosting, and migration from Wix or WordPress keeps or redirects every indexed URL. Send your current site for a free website analysis, or see website redesign.

Which is cheapest: Wix, WordPress or a custom website?

In year one, Wix or WordPress.com, from about US$48 to US$477 a year on published yearly plans, if you build the site yourself. A custom site costs more upfront, but can run with no platform subscription.

Is WordPress better than Wix for SEO?

Both let you set titles, descriptions and sitemaps, and both can rank. WordPress gives more control through plugins and hosting choice, at the cost of more maintenance.

Can I move a Wix site to WordPress later?

Not directly. Wix states that a Wix site must be hosted on Wix's servers, so moving means rebuilding the pages and redirecting every URL.

What maintenance does WordPress need?

Regular updates to WordPress core, the theme and each plugin, plus backups and security checks. Someone must apply and test them.

Who owns a custom-coded website?
