Zero-Click Searches: What a Singapore Business Website Should Do
Short answer: about 6 in 10 Google searches end without a click, by the only large published measure, and AI Overviews lower clicks further on the queries where they appear. A business website should stop chasing clicks on informational searches it cannot win and concentrate on the searches that still click: a service with a location, a price, a comparison, a brand. Those pages should carry the facts an AI answer cites, so the business is named even when no one clicks.
All figures are from the named studies, with their dates. None is a Singapore measurement; no Singapore-specific zero-click study has been published as of 18 October 2026.
What does zero-click mean, and what do the figures say?
A zero-click search ends on the results page. The user reads a snippet, a map listing, a knowledge panel, a sports score or an AI Overview and leaves without visiting a site. The published figures:
| Study | Date | What it measured | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| SparkToro and Datos | July 2024 | US and EU clickstream panel, September 2022 to May 2024 | 58.5% of US and 59.7% of EU Google searches ended with no click. Per 1,000 searches, 360 clicks in the US and 374 in the EU went to the open web; the rest went to Google's own properties. |
| Pew Research Center | 22 July 2025 | 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025 | Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one. They clicked a source cited inside the summary on 1% of visits. |
| Ahrefs | 17 April 2025 | 300,000 keywords, Search Console click-through rates, March 2024 against March 2025 | The top-ranking page had a 34.5% lower average click-through rate when an AI Overview was present. Position-one CTR on informational keywords fell from 5.6% to 3.1%. |
| Ahrefs update | December 2025 | Same method, later data | The gap had widened to 58% lower CTR for the top result when an AI Overview appeared. |
Three cautions when reading these:
- The SparkToro figure counts every search, including navigational and quick-fact queries that were never going to produce a visit to a business site.
- Pew's 1% figure is for clicks on sources cited inside the summary, not for all clicks on the page.
- Ahrefs measured informational keywords. Commercial queries behave differently, which is the point of the next section.
Google extended AI Overviews to more than 200 countries and territories in May 2025, Singapore included, with AI Mode following. The mechanics are the same as in the US studies; the measured rates here may differ.
Which queries still click?
The queries where a results page cannot finish the job for the user:
- Service plus location. "Dental clinic Tampines", "aircon servicing Bukit Timah". The user needs to choose one business, see its hours, and contact it. Maps and the website both get the click.
- Price. "How much is a website in Singapore", "braces cost". An AI Overview gives a range; the user clicks to see what one provider charges.
- Comparison. "Shopify vs WooCommerce Singapore". The summary gives a table; the user clicks to read the reasoning before spending money.
- Brand. Your company name. Zero-click here is a Business Profile that already answered; the website still gets the visit from anyone who wants more.
- Process and eligibility. "EDGE grant website", "PDPA for a contact form". Specific enough that the user wants the source.
- Anything that ends in a form, a booking or a call. The results page cannot take the enquiry.
The queries that no longer click are short definitions, conversions, dates, and general how-to questions with one accepted answer. A business blog built on those queries loses traffic regardless of ranking.
Which pages win the citation and the click?
The same page can be cited inside the AI answer and clicked below it. Both outcomes come from the same properties:
- A direct answer in the first 60 words. The question in the heading, the answer in the first paragraph, with a number in it.
- Facts the summary cannot invent. Your prices, your hours, your address, your timeline, your scope. A page that states "first draft in 14 days" gets cited for it; a page that says "fast turnaround" does not.
- One table. A comparison or price table gives the answer engine the structure it would otherwise have to build, and the figures in it are the ones that get quoted with your name attached.
- Dated sources. A page that links the regulation, the pricing page or the study is treated as a source; a page that asserts without links is treated as opinion.
- A location page per area served. The service-plus-location query lands on a page that names the area, the address, the travel time and the hours.
- Consistent facts across site and Business Profile. Hours, phone and address identical in both places.
What does not help: more words, keyword repetition, a FAQ block that restates the headings, and any text written for the engine rather than a customer. Google's AI features documentation states there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. How the citations are chosen is covered in Google AI Overviews citations.
How do you measure it in Search Console?
Search Console is the only free source that shows the gap between being seen and being clicked.
- Open the Performance report for Google Search. It holds 16 months of clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position by query and page.
- Compare the last 3 months with the same 3 months a year earlier. Rising impressions with flat or falling clicks is the zero-click pattern.
- Filter by query type. Split informational queries from service, price and brand queries and look at the CTR of each group separately. The decline is usually in the first group only.
- Check the generative AI reports. Google announced on 3 June 2026 dedicated reports for impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out to a subset of sites first. If your property has them, a page with AI impressions and no clicks is being cited without a visit.
- Record the brand-name impressions over time. More searches for your name is the measurable result of being cited.
Track enquiries, not sessions, as the output. A page that lost 30% of clicks and kept its enquiry count lost only the visits that were never going to convert.
What should you change this month?
- List your top 30 queries from Search Console and mark each as informational, service, price, comparison or brand.
- Stop writing new pages for the informational group. Keep the existing ones, add a direct answer in the first paragraph, and link them to a service page.
- For every service, build or fix one page that states what, where, for whom, from what price and how long. Put the figures in the first screen.
- Add one table to every comparison and pricing page.
- Make the Business Profile and the website agree on hours, address and phone.
- Add the review link and the WhatsApp button to every service page, so the visit that does happen can become an enquiry in one step.
- Set a monthly check: impressions, clicks and enquiries by query group, plus a test of 10 customer questions in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode to see whether the business is named.
The split between ranking work and citation work is explained in GEO vs SEO.
What cense does
cense's marketing agent runs a daily GEO and SEO schedule: an original article drafted nightly from the client's industry and competitor posts, images and a short video per article, and AI answers checked weekly, with the client approving before anything is published. See SEO and AI search.
What is a zero-click search?+
A search where the user gets what they need on the results page and does not click any result. The answer comes from a snippet, a map, a knowledge panel or an AI Overview.
What share of Google searches are zero-click?+
SparkToro's 2024 study of Datos clickstream data put it at 58.5% in the US and 59.7% in the EU. No equivalent Singapore figure has been published; treat the US and EU numbers as the best available estimate.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?+
Yes, by the published measures. Pew found users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, in March 2025. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appeared, in April 2025.
Which searches still send clicks?+
Searches with a buying or visiting intent: a service plus a location, a price, a comparison, a brand name, or a question the results page cannot answer in two lines.
How do I measure zero-click on my own site?+
In Search Console, compare impressions and clicks by query over 16 months. Rising impressions with flat clicks is the zero-click pattern. The generative AI reports announced in June 2026 show impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.
