Mobile-First Web Design for Singapore Businesses

Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: mobile-first design means the phone layout is decided first and the desktop layout grows from it, not the reverse. In Singapore, phones produced 56.86% of web page views in September 2026 and Google indexes the mobile version of every site, so the phone layout is the version most visitors and the search engine see. A desktop design shrunk to fit a phone is where enquiries are lost.

What is mobile-first design?

Mobile-first is an order of decisions. The designer draws the 390-pixel-wide screen before the 1,440-pixel one, and the developer writes the phone styles as the default, adding wider layouts only where the screen allows.

The method forces three choices early:

  • Which content matters most, because a phone screen shows 1 or 2 blocks at a time.
  • Which actions matter most, because a thumb can reach 1 or 2 buttons without stretching.
  • Which assets are needed, because every image and script is paid for over mobile data.

Google's own guidance on mobile-first indexing asks for the same primary content, the same titles and descriptions and the same structured data on the mobile version as on desktop. A phone version with less content is indexed as the lesser site.

How is it different from responsive design?

Responsive design is a technique. One HTML page carries CSS rules that rearrange columns, resize images and swap menus as the screen width changes. Almost every site built after 2015 is responsive in this sense.

Mobile-first is a sequence. A site can be responsive and still desktop-first: designed on a wide monitor, approved on a wide monitor, then handed to a developer to make it collapse. The collapse usually works, but the priorities do not survive it.

The practical test is where the first call to action lands. On a desktop-first site viewed on a phone, the WhatsApp or enquiry button often sits 2 or 3 screens down. On a mobile-first site it is in the first screen.

What share of visits come from phones?

Three public figures frame the Singapore picture.

The split varies by business. Our observation across client analytics, not a published study, is that consumer services such as F&B, clinics and tuition run higher than the Statcounter average on phones, and B2B services with office-hours traffic run lower. Check your own split in Google Analytics under Tech, then Device category, before deciding how much weight to put on each layout.

The number that matters more than share is the enquiry rate by device. A site with 60% phone traffic and 20% of enquiries from phones has a phone problem, not a traffic problem.

Which elements fail most often on phones?

The same six faults appear in most audits of desktop-first sites.

  • Hero text sized for a monitor. A 72-pixel headline wraps into 5 lines on a phone and pushes the first button below the fold.
  • Tap targets too small or too close. Lighthouse flags targets under 48 by 48 pixels that overlap neighbours, per the tap targets audit. WCAG 2.2 sets a legal-grade floor of 24 by 24 CSS pixels.
  • Text under 12 pixels. Lighthouse's font size audit fails a page when 40% or more of its text is below 12 pixels. Footer legal text and table cells are the usual offenders.
  • Tables that overflow. A 6-column price table on a 390-pixel screen either shrinks to unreadable or forces sideways scrolling. Stack it or cut columns.
  • Images and video loaded at desktop size. A 2,400-pixel hero image sent to a phone over 4G costs seconds and pushes Largest Contentful Paint past the 2.5-second threshold that web.dev defines as good.
  • Pop-ups and sticky bars. A cookie banner, a chat widget and a promo bar together can cover half a phone screen. Google's page experience guidance also counts intrusive interstitials against a page.

A seventh fault is specific to lead-generation sites: the phone number is text, not a tel: link, and the WhatsApp button is an image rather than a wa.me link. Both add taps between the visitor and the enquiry. See WhatsApp vs contact form for the set-up that avoids this.

How do I test my site on a phone?

A 10-minute check that needs no developer.

  1. Open your site on your own phone over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Time how long until the first headline and the first button are usable.
  2. Run the URL through PageSpeed Insights with the Mobile tab selected. Read the Core Web Vitals assessment first. The thresholds are LCP 2.5 seconds, INP 200 milliseconds and CLS 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits.
  3. Try to complete one enquiry with your thumb only. Count the taps from landing to sent message.
  4. Open Chrome on a laptop, press F12, and switch to device mode. Set a mid-range phone and Slow 4G throttling, then load the home page and the top service page.
  5. Zoom the page to 200%. WCAG 2.2 requires text to resize to 200% without loss of content, and content to reflow at a width of 320 CSS pixels without horizontal scrolling.
  6. Check that the phone number dials and the WhatsApp button opens a chat with a prefilled message.

Record the results in a sheet with the date. Repeat after any redesign and once a quarter. The website audit checklist covers the desktop and SEO checks that sit alongside this one.

What cense does

cense designs the phone layout first and tests every page on mobile data before handover. Sites are built in Next.js and hosted on Vercel or Google Cloud, with a WhatsApp button in the first screen. A free SEO report, including the mobile Core Web Vitals result, is sent on WhatsApp within 2 working days.

What is mobile-first web design?

A design method where the phone layout is drawn and built first, then widened for tablets and desktops. The phone version carries the full content, not a cut-down copy.

Is responsive design the same as mobile-first?

No. Responsive is a technique that lets one page adapt to any screen width. Mobile-first is the order of decisions. A responsive site can still be designed desktop-first and squeezed down.

What share of Singapore web visits come from phones?

Statcounter put mobile at 56.86% of Singapore page views in September 2026, desktop at 41.56% and tablet at 1.58%. Your own analytics may differ by industry.

Does Google rank the mobile or the desktop version of my site?

The mobile version. Google crawls with its smartphone agent for indexing and ranking, and completed the move to mobile-first indexing on 5 July 2024.

How do I test my website on a phone?

Open it on your own phone over mobile data, run the URL through PageSpeed Insights with the Mobile tab selected, and check tap targets and text size in Chrome DevTools device mode.
