Website Redesign vs Rebuild: How to Decide

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer: a redesign changes what visitors see and keeps the platform, code and hosting. A rebuild replaces the platform too. Choose a redesign when the site loads within 2.5 seconds, runs on software you own and the forms work. Choose a rebuild when 2 or more of those fail, because fixing them on the old platform usually costs more than starting again. The domain, URLs and rankings can be kept either way.

Published figures below are from each company's own pages, checked 18 October 2026.

What changes in a redesign and what changes in a rebuild?

A redesign is paint on a structure you keep. When the structure is the problem, paint does not fix it. The redesign cost guide covers what each line costs.

Which 6 checks point to a rebuild?

Run each check on the current site. Two or more failures and the rebuild is usually cheaper than a redesign plus the fixes.

  1. Platform. Check whether the site can be exported and moved. Wix states in its help centre that a Wix site must be hosted on Wix's servers. A site that cannot leave its platform cannot be redesigned anywhere else.
  2. Speed. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less. Test 3 pages on a phone. A theme-built site that fails LCP rarely passes after a redesign on the same theme.
  3. Plugins. Count them. Patchstack recorded 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% of them in plugins, and 46% had no patch at the time of disclosure. Each plugin is an update you run for the life of the site.
  4. Ownership. Check that the domain is registered to your company and the hosting is in your account. If an agency holds either, a redesign leaves you where you started.
  5. Security. HTTPS on every page, security headers set, no admin panel at a guessable URL. A redesign changes none of these.
  6. Forms. Check where every enquiry lands: a database you can export, or only an inbox. A form that posts to a third-party tool keeps your leads under that tool's terms.

What do they cost and how long do they take?

New build, Singapore Best Web DesignFrom S$2,500 (1 to 5 pages), S$4,500 (10 to 15 pages)Not stated
New build, OOmFrom S$3,0002 to 3 months
New build, censeFrom S$2,000First draft 14 days after one call

Three points from the table:

  • The cheapest revamp and the cheapest new build are S$500 apart. At that end of the market the two labels describe similar work.
  • A redesign keeps the year-two bills. Awebstar values the hosting and domain in its packages at S$600 to S$900 a year after the free first year, and SG Web Builder bills maintenance at S$80 an hour. A rebuild on a cloud platform can take both lines to S$0.
  • Time on a redesign is spent waiting for content and approvals, not on code. Our estimate for a same-platform redesign is 2 to 6 weeks.

What do you keep either way?

  • Domain. It never changes. Do not use Google's Change of Address tool unless the domain itself moves.
  • URLs. Keep them where you can. Where a URL changes, redirect it with a 301 to the closest new page. Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes says to keep redirects for at least 1 year.
  • Rankings. They attach to URLs, titles and content. Carry over the titles and text that rank, then compare traffic at 30 and 90 days. Steps are in how to redesign a website without losing rankings.
  • Analytics history. The GA4 property stays. Point the new site at the same property.
  • Reviews and Google Business Profile. Unchanged, as long as the website field still points at your domain.

Decision table

SituationChoose
Loads within 2.5 seconds, you own hosting, forms work, design looks datedRedesign
On Wix or Squarespace and you want to leaveRebuild
WordPress with 15 or more plugins and a monthly maintenance billRebuild
Agency holds the domain or hostingRebuild, after the domain transfer
Copy is fine, layout is the problemRedesign

If the table says rebuild, treat the current site as the content source and nothing more. Export the copy, list the URLs, note what ranks, and build on a platform you own.

What cense does

cense rebuilds sites in Next.js on Vercel or Google Cloud, with every indexed URL kept or redirected. The first draft arrives 14 days after one call, the client owns the domain, code, hosting and data, and monthly maintenance is S$0. See website redesign in Singapore.

What is the difference between a website redesign and a rebuild?

A redesign changes the layout, colours and copy on the platform you already have. A rebuild replaces the platform, code and hosting as well. The domain and URLs can be kept in both.

When should I rebuild instead of redesign?

When 2 or more of these fail: the site cannot be exported, it misses Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds, it depends on many plugins, you do not own the domain or hosting, HTTPS and security headers are missing, or enquiries do not reach a database you control.

How much does a website redesign cost in Singapore?

Innomedia publishes S$1,500 to S$4,000 for a simple SME revamp and S$4,000 to S$10,000 for a corporate revamp. New builds from agencies that publish prices start at S$2,000 to S$3,000.

Will a rebuild lose my Google rankings?

Not if every indexed URL is kept or redirected with a 301 and the titles and content that rank are carried over. Google asks that redirects stay in place for at least 1 year.

How long does each take?

A redesign on the same platform is usually 2 to 6 weeks. Published rebuild timelines run from 14 days to a first draft at cense to 2 to 3 months for a standard project at OOm.
