Website Conversion Rate: Benchmarks and 10 Fixes

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer: a service website that turns 2% to 6% of visits into enquiries is performing within published ranges. Ruler Analytics puts the average across 110 million sessions at 5.13% in May 2026; Unbounce's 2024 landing page median is 6.6%. Most sites below 2% have one of ten fixable causes, and the three cheapest fixes are a visible contact action, a stated price and a page that loads in under 2.5 seconds on a phone.

Sources are Ruler Analytics, Unbounce, LocaliQ, Baymard Institute, web.dev and Google Analytics documentation, checked 18 October 2026.

How do you calculate it for a service business?

Conversion rate is enquiries divided by sessions, for one page and one month.

  • Count enquiries as form submissions, WhatsApp taps, phone taps and email taps. An enquiry is the action, not the sale.
  • Count sessions from Google Analytics 4, filtered to Singapore if you only serve Singapore.
  • Divide. 18 enquiries from 600 sessions is 3.0%.

Do this per landing page, not for the whole site. A blog post that ranks for a research query will convert at 0.2% and drag the average down without telling you anything about the service pages.

Three rules keep the number honest:

  • Mark each enquiry action as a key event in GA4. Google's key events documentation explains that any collected event can be marked as one.
  • Reconcile against the inbox or database. If GA4 records 40 form submissions and 12 emails arrived, the form is broken, not the page.
  • Segment by source. Paid search, organic and direct behave differently; one blended figure hides the problem.

Enquiries from a page is one number. Enquiries that became quotes is the second. Both belong in the monthly sheet. For why traffic arrives but does not convert, see website traffic but no enquiries.

What do published benchmarks say?

Three dated studies, three different definitions. Use them as ranges, not targets.

Ruler Analytics26 May 2026Website sessions to qualified lead or sale, 110 million sessions5.13%Legal 7.9%, professional services 6.1%, education 6.3%, finance 6.3%, construction 4.9%, real estate 2.8%, healthcare 2.3%, retail 2.4%
Unbounce Conversion Benchmark Report2024Landing page visits to conversion, 57 million conversions on 41,000 pages6.6% medianLegal 6.3%, professional services 6.1%, range 3.8% (SaaS) to 12.3% (entertainment)
LocaliQ search advertising benchmarks1 June 2026Google Ads click to conversion8.18%Education 13.14%, dental 10.67%, home services 8.05%, legal 5.55%, business services 4.85%, real estate 3.70%

Three readings from the table:

  • Paid clicks convert higher than organic sessions because the visitor searched for the service and the ad matched it. Compare organic figures to Ruler, paid figures to LocaliQ.
  • Real estate and healthcare sit at 2% to 4% in every study. A clinic at 3% is normal; a law firm at 3% is below range.
  • Unbounce's 2024 data found pages written at a 5th to 7th grade reading level converted at 11.1%, against 5.3% for professional-level text. Simpler copy is the cheapest fix on this list.

None of these studies is Singapore-only. Treat them as the published range and measure your own pages.

10 fixes ranked by effort

Lowest effort first. Each has a figure behind it.

  1. Put one contact action on every page. A WhatsApp or call button fixed on screen on phones. Mobile is 56.86% of Singapore web traffic per Statcounter, September 2026. Half a day.
  2. State a price or a starting price. Baymard's cart abandonment research finds 40% of abandoners cite unexpected costs and 12% could not see the total up front. The same hesitation applies to a service quote. Half a day.
  3. Rewrite the first screen. What you do, for whom, one action. Reading level grade 5 to 7 per Unbounce. One day per page.
  4. Cut form fields to 4 or 5. Name, phone, service, message, consent. Baymard found 18% abandon when forced to create an account; every extra step costs a share. Half a day.
  5. Add a reply time beside the button. "Replies within 2 working hours on weekdays." Half a day.
  6. Fix load speed on mobile. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile. Vodafone's A/B test in 2021 found a 31% LCP improvement produced 8% more sales and a 15% higher lead-to-visit rate. One to five days depending on the platform.
  7. Add proof with names and numbers. Google review count linked to the profile, named clients with permission, licences with the issuing body. One to two days to collect.
  8. Match the page to the query. A visitor searching "corporate secretary fees" should land on the fees page, not the homepage. One day per query group.
  9. Remove pop-ups and chat widgets that cover the button on phones. Half a day.
  10. Rebuild the page on a faster stack. When fixes 6 and 9 cannot be done inside the current platform, the rebuild is the fix. Two to four weeks.

Deloitte's Milliseconds Make Millions study for Google found a 0.1 second improvement in mobile speed raised retail conversion by 8.4% and travel by 10.1%. Fix 6 is cheap relative to its effect.

What should you test first on a 5-page site?

A 5-page site does not have the traffic for A/B tests. A test needs hundreds of conversions per variant to be trusted; a site with 30 enquiries a month will take a year to read a result. Run before-and-after changes instead, one at a time, each for a full month.

Order for a typical Singapore service site:

  • Month 1: fix 1 and fix 5 on the busiest service page.
  • Month 2: fix 2 and fix 3 on the same page.
  • Month 3: fix 6 across the site.
  • Month 4: fix 7 on the homepage and the busiest service page.

Choose the page with the most sessions and the lowest rate. That is where one change moves the most enquiries. Which channel to lead with, WhatsApp or a form, is covered in WhatsApp vs contact form.

How do you measure the change?

One sheet, five columns, updated on the first working day of each month.

ColumnWhere it comes from
PageGA4 landing page report
Sessions (Singapore)GA4, filtered by country
EnquiriesKey events, reconciled to the inbox or database
RateEnquiries divided by sessions
Change madeThe fix number and the date

Rules for reading it:

  • Compare the month to the previous month and to the same month last year. Seasonality in Singapore is real: tuition enquiries rise before term, renovation enquiries fall over Chinese New Year.
  • Ignore a change smaller than the month-to-month noise. On 600 sessions, a move from 3.0% to 3.3% is 2 enquiries; wait another month.
  • Record the fix date on the row. A rate that moves two months after a change was probably something else.

Enquiries that land in your own database carry the source page automatically, which makes the reconcile step a query instead of an inbox count.

What cense does

cense builds every enquiry form in-house so each lead lands in the client's own database with the source page recorded. Website from S$2,000, first draft 14 days after one call. See website design Singapore.

What is a good website conversion rate for a service business?

Between 2% and 6% of sessions becoming enquiries is within published ranges. Ruler Analytics' May 2026 study averages 5.13% across 110 million sessions; Unbounce's 2024 landing page median is 6.6%. Real estate and healthcare sit at 2% to 4% in every study.

How do I calculate my website conversion rate?

Divide enquiries by sessions for one landing page and one month. Count form submissions, WhatsApp taps, phone taps and email taps as enquiries, mark each as a key event in GA4, and reconcile the total against your inbox or database.

Why is my conversion rate so much lower than the benchmarks?

The most common causes are no visible contact action on phones, no price, slow mobile load, a long form and copy written above a grade 7 reading level. Fix the busiest service page first and measure for a full month.

Does page speed change conversion rate?

Yes, and the effect is documented. Vodafone's 2021 A/B test found a 31% better Largest Contentful Paint produced 8% more sales. Deloitte's study for Google found a 0.1 second mobile speed gain raised retail conversion 8.4%.

Should a small site run A/B tests?

Not with under a few hundred conversions a month; the result will not be reliable. Make one change at a time, run it for a full month, and compare against the previous month and the same month last year.
